Spirituality at St Margaret’s CE Primary School:

A Lifelong Journey Inspired by Pentecost

Acts 2:3-4 – "They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them."

Just as Pentecost was the beginning of the disciples’ journey, spirituality at St. Margaret’s is part of a person’s lifelong process of growth, action, and discovery. By Looking In, Looking Out, Stepping Out, and Looking Beyond, pupils are empowered to live with faith, kindness, and a sense of wonder—bringing the spirit of Pentecost into their daily lives.

Looking In – Reflection and Growth

Acts 1:14 – “They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.”

At Pentecost, the disciples experienced a profound inner transformation when the Holy Spirit descended upon them. It was a moment of deep personal change, filling them with courage, faith, and a renewed sense of purpose. This mirrors the idea of Looking In, where we pause to reflect on our values, choices, and personal growth. Just as the disciples found strength in their faith, pupils at St. Margaret’s are encouraged to explore their own beliefs and identity, growing with kindness and integrity.

Looking Out – Seeing and Caring for the World

Acts 2:5-6 – "Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken.”

Pentecost was not just a personal experience—it was a call to see the world differently. The disciples, once afraid, suddenly found themselves speaking in different languages, able to connect with people from all nations. This reflects the idea of Looking Out—understanding different perspectives, building relationships, and showing empathy. At St. Margaret’s, pupils are encouraged to embrace diversity, recognise the needs of others, and build a compassionate community.

Stepping Out – Advocating for Change

Acts 1:8 – “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Pentecost marked the beginning of the disciples’ mission. They didn’t just keep their experience to themselves, they stepped out boldly to share the message of love, hope, and justice. This reflects with the idea that spirituality isn’t passive—it calls us to act. Whether through acts of kindness, standing up for what is right, or helping those in need, pupils at St. Margaret’s are inspired to step out and make a difference in the world, just as the disciples did.

Looking Beyond – Embracing Questions, Awe and Wonder

Acts 2:12 – "Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, ‘What does this mean?’"

Pentecost was a moment of awe and wonder—a miraculous event that left people asking questions and seeking understanding. The Holy Spirit’s presence reminded the disciples (and us) that there is more to life than what we can see or explain. This connects to Looking Beyond, where we embrace curiosity, ask big questions, and marvel at the mysteries of life. Whether through faith, nature, or science, pupils at St. Margaret’s are encouraged to explore the beauty and wonder of the world, just as the first Christians did after Pentecost.
